Phew! It has been quite the ride over the past few weeks.

As Washington, D.C. prepares for the impending administration flip, Texas House and Senate legislators are getting ready for the upcoming 87th legislative session. The balance in the Texas House remained the same--- 87-63 with Republicans keeping control of the chamber. House Democrats pulled out all the stops attempting to flip the house and regain the majority they lost in 2003. The Texas Senate stayed roughly the same, with Democrats gaining one seat—bringing the balance to 18-13 in favor of Republicans.

NAIFA-Texas members enjoyed a legislative panel last week where they received a glimpse of what is on the horizon legislation-wise come January 12, 2021. The legislative panel explained that broadband expansion, telehealth, affordable healthcare, the state budget, and redistricting will be among the “spotlight” issues.

As of today, 549 total bills have been filed. In the coming weeks, the NAIFA-Texas Government Relations Committee will be convening to finalize our legislative priorities! We are very excited to embark on the 87th legislative session—however, it may look!
